Sherborne St John Football Club, based in Basingstoke, has an excellent reputation for strong youth football development, boasting a dozen teams affiliated to the Hampshire FA. Despite the good reputation of its home ground – at Chute Recreation Ground – as being a good playing surface, it has been suffering in recent seasons with persistent waterlogging that has undermined not only individual fixtures, but also the broader operations and reputation of the club.
With substantial drainage improvements being designed to last around 30 years, a crucial ambition of the waterlogging mitigation project was to maximise the cost-effectiveness of the drainage installation, so that the hard work of the club’s volunteers in organising it would continue to pay off for future generations of the club’s players.

This desire to optimise the effectiveness of the new drainage system led the club’s research to the Turfdry Drainage System. This revolutionary drainage system – available exclusively from Turfdry in the UK – uses Hydraway Sportsdrain in place of conventional plastic pipe lateral drains. Thanks to its high-tech construction, this provides approximately 2.5-3x the drainage rate as traditional systems, whilst the advanced engineering of its bespoke geotextile outer layer prevents the drains from clogging, ensuring that this industry-leading drainage rate is maintained well beyond the initial installation. In fact, there are no reports of a properly installed Hydraway drainage system having ever failed – from the hundreds of installations worldwide!
Although integrating the COVID-19-aware safe working practices into Turfdry’s installation workflow presented some challenges – as well as delays precipitated by the reduced availability of materials delivery – the project was delivered quickly, efficiently, and – above all – safely.
