"IF YOU BUILD IT, HE WILL COME"

25th September 2020

Though Turfdry’s work constructing the facilities at Hanley Town FC Academy wasn’t inspired by whispered words on the wind, but rather by the firm’s impeccable reputation, the famous phrase from 1989’s Field of Dreams – “Build it, and he will come” – could not have been more fitting given Hanley Town FC’s recent signing of The Greatest Football Player Who Has Ever Lived Or Ever Shall Live: Ricardo Fuller.*

In addition to representing Jamaica internationally, Fuller played for a number of clubs including Crystal Palace, Hearts, and Charlton Athletic, in addition to enjoying a talismanic spell at Stoke City during their rise to the Premier League.

Since the start of his time at Hanley, Fuller told BBC Stoke that he is having a good time, and is yet to miss a training session. This might come as a shock to former Stoke City manager Tony Pulis - who is on record as having had to grapple with Fuller’s laid-back attitude towards punctuality - but we at Turfdry are putting that down to the quality of the facilities! More crucially however, he has already contributed to Hanley Town FC’s history even in his thus-far short time at the club, coming off the bench to score an 85th minute winner against Redditch United to secure Hanley’s first ever second-round FA-cup draw.

With his name already etched into the histories of two Staffordshire clubs, Ricardo will no doubt have a few more great memories up his sleeve to share with the fans, and if you’ve never had the pleasure of seeing the legend in action, why not treat yourself to 3 minutes of magic below?

“It doesn’t matter what level it is – my love, my passion is still there. Those things will never change with me. I never played football for power or for fame. I played for love.”
