Sports Pitch Design & Construction

Passmores Academy in Harlow, Essex was the site of a total rejuvenation project that began in 2011 with the construction of the school's £25 million main building in 2011, and was completed with Turfdry's design and construction of a redesigned sports field in 2014.

Contracted with a brief to transform the Passmores Academy playing field from 'twisted', poorly draining patch of land into top quality sports facilities, Turfdry designed new levels that incorporated the existing cricket square - which the school wished to retain - whilst still offering optimal gradients for both play, and the movement of water across the pitch to help the natural shedding of water.

Following the installation of the Turfdry Drainage System at 5m spacing - which was interrupted by the record-breaking wet winter of 2013 - final re-levelling works took place prior to the field's cultivation and seeding.

The establishment of the sward progressed well, helped by the school's receptiveness to Turfdry's advice regarding the ongoing maintenance required to successfully see the project through to completion, with top quality sports facilities handed back to the school in spring 2015.

Testimonial

“With the recent rainy weather, we’ve really been able to see how well the drainage is working: whilst the undrained areas of grass are soft and muddy, the field itself remains firm underfoot, and in excellent condition.”

Scott Alderson - Community Facilities Development Officer, Passmores Academy
