Highway Drainage
After 25 years of use - the road leading to the Forth Bridge had deteriorated to the degree that total reconstruction was required. In addition to remediating the damage, the project aimed to strengthen the road’s construction, with improved drainage designed to reduce the detrimental impact of ground water on the surface.
To this end, a single 600m run of 900mm Hydraway was installed on each side of the carriageway - at the end of the dig during the road’s reconstruction, with works complete in December 1987. With a high inflow rate and compressive strength, combined with laboratory proven clog-resistance, Hydraway is the perfect choice for an effective, hard-wearing, long-term drainage solution for carriageway drainage projects such as this.
Three and a half years after the installation, the road was inspected and appeared in good condition, with no movement noted. A trio of test holes were dug to expose the Hydraway drain by 300mm, before an incision was made in the geotextile to allow for the inspection of the drain’s core using a borescope. No clogging or damage was found on either the inside or outside of the drain, and it was noted that the area was dry. Additionally, inspection of the manhole at the end of the drainage run revealed that the Hydraway continued to perform well.
No Damage
Still performing well!

“It appears to be up to our operational expectations, has been maintenance-free to date, and continues to work satisfactorily”.
